Head Toward Your Fear

The instinctive fear for safety can be detrimental to a fulfilling life, if you do not learn to use it to your advantage.  First, recognize the difference between the fear of real physical danger and the fear of going beyond your comfort zone.  Your physical response to both may be the same — heart pounding, sweaty palms, heavy breathing, and an instinct to run.  However, in order to live on the edge with the passion and purpose needed to accomplish your goals and dreams, you must learn to cope with the fear of risk, failure, and discomfort, differently than the fear of physical harm.  Start by recognizing the fear of failure, mistake and embarrassment merely protects the ego from injury, like the fear of physical danger protects the body.  Staying in this comfort zone, simply to protect your ego, severely impedes the fulfillment of your dreams.  So, each time you find yourself gripped with a paralyzing fear, unrelated to real physical danger, while dreaming of your ideal life — push through that fear by stepping toward the direction of your dream or goal, rather than retreating.  Leaning into the fear will bring your dreams closer to reality and make the fear of failure dissipate.  This fear tells you the direction you need to go in order to grow.
